The intent of these revisions was to make Group X the designation for cultural studies courses. Therefore, the General Education Committee formed a study group last fall to develop revised language for Group H. The committee forwarded this proposal to ASCRC in November. The proposed revision was then circulated to academic departments and faculty who teach in Group H for feedback. As a result of this process, ASCRC and the General Education Committee present the following motion to Faculty Senate: Effective Fall Semester 2017, the general education requirements for Groups VI, more commonly known as Group H, will be articulated as Group VI Historical Studies (H), with the criteria stated below. All new requests for Group H designations will be evaluated according to these new criteria beginning in fall 2017. Courses currently listed in these groups will be unaffected until the next rolling review, at which time those courses submitted for renewal will be evaluated according to the new criteria. Group VI: Historical Studies (H): The primary purpose of courses in this perspective is to explore the historical contexts and narratives of human behavior, ideas, institutions, and societies through an analysis of their patterns of development or differentiation in the past. These courses are wide-ranging in chronological, geographical, or topical focus. They introduce students to methods of inquiry that enable them to understand and evaluate the causes and significance of events, texts, or artifacts. Learning Goals: Upon completion of a course in this group, a student will be able to: 1. Critically analyze and evaluate primary sources such as texts, pictorial evidence, oral histories, music, and artifacts- within their respective historical contexts. 2. Synthesize ideas and information in order to understand the problems, causes, and consequences of historical developments and events. Appendix 1: Current Group H and Group X Current Language: Group VI: Historical and Cultural Studies (H): These courses present the historical or cultural contexts of ideas and institutions, and examine cultural development or differentiation in the human past. They are foundational in that they are wide-ranging in chronological, geographical, or topical focus, or in that they introduce students to methods of inquiry specific to a particular discipline. Criteria: Courses teach students how to: present ideas and information with a view to understanding the causes, development, and consequences of historical events; evaluate texts or artifacts within their historical and/or cultural contexts; and analyze human behavior, ideas, and institutions within their respective historical and/or cultural contexts. The course justification should explain the approach and focus with respect to its chronological, geographical, and/or topical content. A methodological component (e.g. historiography or ethnography) must be apparent. Learning Goals: Upon completion of this group, a student will be able to: 1. synthesize ideas and information with a view to understanding the causes and consequences of historical developments and events; 2. evaluate texts or artifacts within their historical and/or cultural contexts; 3. analyze human behavior, ideas, and institutions within their respective historical and/or cultural contexts. Group X: Cultural & International Diversity (X) These courses foster an appreciation for diverse cultures, their histories and contemporary forms, and their positions in world spheres of power and change. This includes knowledge of diverse cultures in comparative and thematic frameworks. Knowledge gained through courses in the X perspective prepares students to cultivate ways of thinking that foster an understanding of the complexities of indigenous or international cultures and global issues, past and present. Learning Goals: Upon completion of a course in this group, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the diverse ways humans structure their social, political, and cultural lives; 2. Interpret human activities, ideas, and institutions with reference to diverse cultural, historical and geo-political perspectives and physical environments; and 3. Recognize the complexities of inter-cultural and international communications and collaborative endeavors, and relate this to the complex challenges of the 21st century. #*25AB\q}~ # % G P X o g ! 4 < ` h } ~ θííí٭ٖٖuhShNCJaJhSh\jCJaJhShCJaJhShwCJaJhShiA6CJaJhShiACJaJhShacCJaJhShyDCJaJhSh CJaJhSh7CJaJhSh75CJaJh?.h hsthac)5 ! d^gd d^gdNydgdNy hd^hgdNydgdNy $da$gdNy " # 9 Z x z % + q #LMNɾ꾳꨾ߟzvjvfhShSh5CJaJhhSh>*CJaJhSh5>*CJaJhSho4CJaJhShacaJhShSCJaJhShhoCJaJhShNCJaJhSh\jCJaJhShH`CJaJhShacCJaJhShCJaJhSh2pKCJaJ(!"#LMN`aY35EV Ld^`LgdS Zdx^ZgdS Zd^ZgdS d^gdN^_bXY5ChVchRjhRUho4hShS>* hS5>*hSh>*hSh5>*hSh!(>0dgdo4hd^h`gdS Zd^ZgdS80p1h:po4/ =!"#$% ^4 666666666vvvvvvvvv66666686666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666hH66666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666p62&6FVfv2(&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv&6FVfv8XV~_HmH nH sH tH V`V Normal dd*$$CJOJPJQJ_HaJmH sH tHr@r Heading 1!@& & F & F$$#B* ph6_OJQJCJ5^JaJ\v@v Heading 2!@& & F & F$($'B* ph.tOJQJCJ>*5PJ^JaJN@qN Heading 3@& & F & FCJ5aJ\T@qT Heading 4@& & F & FCJ65aJ]\N@qN Heading 5@& & F & FCJ5aJ\N@qN Heading 6@& & F & FCJ5aJ\N@qN Heading 7@& & F & FCJ5aJ\N@qN Heading 8@& & F & FCJ5aJ\DA D Default Paragraph FontViV 0 Table Normal :V 44 la (k ( 0No List DA D Default Paragraph FontRoR Balloon Text CharCJOJPJQJ^JaJHoH annotation referenceCJaJRo!R Comment Text CharCJOJPJQJ^JaJ^o1^ Comment Subject Char5CJOJPJQJ\^JaJXoAX Heading 1 Char#5B* CJOJQJ\^JaJph6_BoQB WW8Num4z0B*CJ^JaJo(ph*/a* WW8Num4z1*/q* WW8Num4z2*/* WW8Num4z3*/* WW8Num4z4*/* WW8Num4z5*/* WW8Num4z6*/* WW8Num4z7*/* WW8Num4z8FoF WW8Num6z0B*CJPJ^JaJo(ph*/* WW8Num6z1*/* WW8Num6z2*/* WW8Num6z3*/!* WW8Num6z4*/1* WW8Num6z5*/A* WW8Num6z6*/Q* WW8Num6z7*/a* WW8Num6z8NON Heading 'x$OJQJCJPJ ^J aJ6B@6 Body Text (x(/@( List)^J H"@H Caption *xx $CJ6^J aJ].O.
